What to Expect in Your First Driving Lesson

Your first lesson is about getting comfortable, not being thrown in the deep end.

By the time your first lesson starts, your licence check will already be complete from when you booked. On the day, your instructor will physically check your licence too, so bring it with you.

Next is a quick eyesight check, reading a number plate from around 20 metres away. It's a legal requirement, not a test to worry about.

Your instructor will then have a proper chat with you, about any previous driving experience, what you already know, and how confident you're feeling. That conversation shapes where the lesson actually goes. Complete beginners usually start in a car park or on a quiet road. If you've driven before, or you're more experienced, the lesson might focus on a specific task instead.

Whichever it is, it's paced around you, not the instructor. There's no schedule you're expected to keep up with.
